Students who ignore announcements
Does anyone else have trouble getting students to read your weekly announcements? How do you handle this problem? How do you make sure students are aware of housekeeping issues? How do you encourage students to pay attention to course expectations as the session moves on and the freshness of that information fades?
I agree. Holding them accountable by deducting points is the best way to make them remember not to ignore rules and policies. Some of them initially respond with defiant attitude, but as long as I stand my ground and I am consistent, they eventually realize that they just have to respect and obey school rules and policies. I make them understand that it is not different in the real world where it's either they abide by the company's policies, or they get disciplinary action or even get fired.
Hi Vida,
What a great way to encourage students. Students will come to your rescue whenever they know some students are just simply trying to get over.

Hi Jenny,
I annonce on day one that I will communicate in class and via the portal. If I grade assignments and a student fails to submit, I will note it on the portal and give the last date assignment will be accepted. Once one student receives a zero and attempts to argue they didn't know, I usually receive support from the class that grades were posted and message received. This is because I also add a thank you for submitting assignment on time as a message on the portal. This I feel helps encourage students.
Hi Jaryd,
That's right, we need to prepare our students for the real world. It is no fairy tale life in the real world. It is tough.

I agree Patricia! These students are adults and need to start taking responsibility for themselves and not assume everything is going to be given to or spoon fed to them. It isn’t going to happen when they get into their career so it needs to start before then, what better place than your classroom.
Hi Jenny,
Hold the students accountable by deducting points. In the real world they cannot ignore what is required of them, otherwise they may become terminated.
