Use of cell phones

Sometimes students may have the need to use the phone while they are in class
I do not allow students to use the phone in the classroom but I tell them that if they need to use their phone they can go outside the classroom and use it. They can come back to class after they finish
I do not necessarily see anything wrong with it. I would appreciate any ideas about possible negative consequences of this policy I have. Thanks

Hi Ann,
Okay, if this works for you super! We have a no cell phone tolerance policy instutionwide.

Patricia Scales

I ask students to inform me prior to the beginning of class if they are going to need to use their phones. This cuts down on the amount of cell phone usage.

Hi Sharif,
We need to be stricter when it comes to cell phone usage in the classroom. Many employers do not let their employees have cell phone engagement openly and at their leisure.

I agree, cell phones ringing in class dont add to student learning and it disrupts the class.
Even in clinical setting healthcare worker are not allowed to talk on phone while dealing with patients.

STUDENTS SHOULD USE CELL PHONES ONLY IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS. CELL PHONES ARE DISRUPTIVE TO THE CLASS, HAVE STUDENTS TURN THEM ON VIBRATE MODE.

I agree in concept with students taking their cell phone calls, but outside of the classroom. Phones on vibrate, though, for sure. The problem is that depending on how long they are out, they are missing material that they may not be able to understand without disrupting the other students or the class in general. I'm not advocating going back to the pre-cell phone era, but to be honest, I didn't have a cell phone going through all my school years, and somehow - life went on. We are using technology as a crutch many times, not as a necessity. Again - I just question what is really necessary, and what is just a self created distraction.

I agree. From day one I always go over rules and regulations and cell phones are on the list. I know emergencies come up but I just ask that all my students refrain from cell phone usage at this given time. They can keep their phones on vibration mode and if they are expecting a very important call just go outside of the class room to take the call.

While I would prefer to simply "ban" cell 'phones from the classroom, this is no longer a part of our lives. I do NOT use the cell in class but ask the students to keep on vibrate and leave the classroom as needed. However, yes, I agree that excessive use of this means I will have a discussion with that student.

Hi
Yes I also do the same thing. Usually it does not get out of hand but if something like that happens either I make a general class announcement or talk to each specific student outside after the class is over

Hi Reynaldo,
I concur! Emergencies do come about and whether it is made known via cell phone or the administrative assistant getting you out of class, it is a slight distrataction, so choose your poison.

I don't allow cell phone usage of any kind in my classes. Not only are they a distraction, but I have had instances of academic dishonesty via text message. Since then, I've banned them from the classroom. I have had students tell me they use them as calculators, but I won't even allow that.

I do not mind cell phones and I request the same of my students. I ask them to keep their phones on vibrate and step out with out disturbing others if needed. It would be no different than them leaving to the restroom. If it starts getting out of hand, I have a private conversation with the student.

Hi Patricia
I agree with you. This is what I think. In some cases I believe there might be situations when a student may need to use the phone. I even think that instructors may also need to use the phone. For example somebody may have a child in childcare and they know if childcare calls is because there is an emergency so the student/instructor may need to go outside to take the call. In those cases students being a little distracted because an student went outside the classroom is a trade off because nobody know when an emergency may happen. Let me know what you think

Hi Reynaldo,
This is less distractions by doing it this way, however it causes distractions. The student who leaves the room misses class time/instructions, and the other students are slightly distracted by the student exiting and then reentering.
