How to deal with students that have a hard time reading.

I have students in my class that have a retention problem to read their skill books to prep for a text or even read up on what they are learning in the class.

In the case that some of the students have a difficult time with reading, I like to make out handouts that I distribute to the whole class. I take the time to read these handouts together with the students, and always allow question and answer time immediately afterwards. This makes it easier for those who did not understand to ask about what was read without feeling embarrassed that they have difficulty in reading.

Hi Jordan,
It certainly is a sad situation when it has been determined that a particular student has a reading deficiency. I try not to put these students in a bad way. It is already embarrassing enough, and I do not want to call more attention to their deficiency.

Hi Anneke,
Reading deficiencies present a challenge to the student and the instructor. When this has come up in the classroom I first acknowledge the issue with the student to demonstrate empathy for their situation. In addition, I avoid situations that could cause embarrassment to the student like asking them to read aloud. To aid the student I will offer them the option to have tests read to them as well as the answers in the case of multiple choice type questions and that has proven successful.
