Leaving early?

My students are older and thus have families and othe situations that deem for them to leave early. What can i do to negate this?

Hi Shannie,
I consider arriving late or leaving early the same as well. At work one is not any worse than the other. I like your repercusssions. Your institution has polciies in place that will certainly produce a better employee.

Hi Robert.

I consider arriving late or leaving early the same. The student is docked points for each 15-minute block or time, or part thereof, in their professionalism points. Additionally, in our school, 4 tardies are equivalent to 1 absence, and 5 absences will reduce your final grade by one full grade.

This is enough to keep most students from leaving early. We strive to emulate the workplace, so we let the students know that leaving early in unacceptable, and often frowned upon in the real world. If they have issues with daycare or family transportation or whatever now, how do they expect to handle it when they get to the work place? These things need to be addressed now. The "It's only school. I wouldn't do that if this were a real job" excuse is lame, at best.

I agree that they are adults and we can not make them stay in class. On my syllabus I state that I will administer a pop quiz at any time that I feel it is necessary. The school I work for does not allow them to make up a quiz so if the leave early and I give them one they are out the points. It has worked really well with keeping them in class.

Hey Robert,

I have had this problem in the past and now my students know to expect a pop quiz at any time. If I give a pop quiz at the end of class and they are not there they get a different hearder version and the highest grade they can get is a 90. Once this was explained students stopped leaving early.

Hi Ruby,
Great recordkeeping and documentation are ways to justify why a student received a particular grade.

When my students leave early, I note the minutes on the sign-in sheet so I can correctly record it in the computer. This has worked for me in times when students dispute their class attendance and their final grade.

Hi Robert,
Just because they are older and have families along with other situations they still have to be held accountable; in the workplace this is not going to fly. I give an attendance grade, and leaving early, coming late, or being absent results in points lost. There is one point deducted for each tardy and early departure and 5 points are deducted for each absence.

Robert I have the same problem, But, again they are all adults and we can't make them stay in class. Alot of the time I post a daily quiz up on the board and I love to execute a daily quiz at the last ten mins. of class time! students can make up the quiz but, I give them an automatic minus ten points. This seems to put things back in perspective for them! Good luck!
