Getting Started

I am finishing up my first term teaching and I must stay, I had a great time! I feel the hardest part was getting started. I advise new teachers to go into the classwork with confidence and with intentions to bond with the students. Making that bond is critical in a small classroom and the students will appriecate you more. My only concern with my teaching method is that I didn't set strong guidelines from the beginning. I will not do that next term! Make sure that students know that they can not walk all over you!

Hi Lauren,
I was 23 years old when I entered this industry, and I always held myself at a higher standard than my students. I lead by example in all areas, and I never had a problem with age. I have been in the industry for more than 22 years. Demeanor is everything.

I am new to teaching and tend to be younger than most of my students. I use my professional experience in private practice to set myself apart and give myself more credibility.

I also tend to have to really step in the classroom with that confidence as most of my students are my age or older. It can sometimes be difficult to relate to the older students.

My first teaching experiance was pretty much the same. I am a young instructor most of my students are either my age or younger so it is real difficult to put yourself in that authority figure when you can relate to some of the students. Needless to say I changed my method quick the following term.
