How to evaluate student's abilities

How does one assess student's ability from the beginning of class?

I teach various writing courses. My journalism course is a varied level of students from those beginning the program to those ready to graduate. The very first day I have students do a timed writing based on given facts. This helps me to determine where they are at in their writing ability. At the end of the term I have them complete a timed writing based on the same facts. I then show students their writings from the begining so they can "see" what they have learned for themselves. It also helps me to see the progress and overall understanding.

Hi Robert,
Some classes have pretests and posttests. You should be able to see improvement in your students tests/quizzes from Day 1 throughout the grading period to the end of the grading period.
