Tardiness

Tardiness is a issue that effects the entire class, what should we do wwith the students that are constantly trady?

I have started implementing quizzes at the beginning of class. Something easy that if they have paid attention they would do well on. I tell them that if they are tardy, they do not have an opportunity to make up the quiz. It has worked well and the tardiness and absences have decreased.

In my clases, I have a 10 point quiz every week. this is given in the first 10 minutes of class. If a student arrives 8 minutes late, they have 2 minutes to complete. This has brought tardiness to a hault.

Hi Kim,
You are right! Do not hold your timely students up for a student who is tardy. Move on and give your students knowledge, and when it is doable get the tardy student caught up.

Maybe I need to try this method... I tend to stop what I'm into during class to get that student that came in tardy, caught up with what we were just doing in class!! I need to be more stern with my students when it comes to them being tardy, because I see that they are not having the respect for me that I deserve as their Instructor!!!

A great idea to help reduce tardies, is to have a pop quiz. Start it within 5 minutes of the clas start, pop quizzes can not be made up, once the quiz is handed out and the student walks in, they wouldn't be able to complete the quiz. If you use this, after a few 0's, the student will get the hint.

Hi Patricia,
Thanks for your reply. I agree, I am not a fan of dropping grades either. However, I find that I run into trouble if a student has a legitimate excuse for being late or absent to a class. I don't typically allow quizzes to be made up, so it works out well if I just drop everyone's lowest grade. Those students who missed a quiz receive a "0" for that quiz, which is dropped.

Hi Deborah,
You handled this quickly and swiftly, and you were very polite and use great tact upon the initial contact with the student. We have to treat students the way we would like to be treated.
Patricia

Thanks thats what I've been doing. Actually today someone came in a half hour late for an exam. They started to talk to someone in the room and I asked them politely to please sit down and take the test. We spoke after the class was over and I explained that I am approachable but that it is not ok to come in late and disrupt the class in progress, no matter what her excuse was for being late. She verbalized her understanding.

Hi Stephanie,
I typically do what you do, however I am not a fan of dropping any grades. I let my students know on Day 1 that ALL grades will be calculated, therefore I expect them to put their best foot forward at all times.
Patricia

Hi Deborah,
What I typically do in this case, I do not hold up the class for students who come in tardy to get them caught up, but I will take my break time and the student's break time as well as after class time to try to get the student caught up.

Hi Susan.
I do not offer extra credit under any circumstances. I feel like students need to complete, and focus on what is required of them to the best of their ability. That said, I have tried several things to address the tardiness issue: 1) Administer a short 10 or 15 minute quiz at the beginning of each class. At the end of the allotted time, collect the quizzes and move right into the course content. If a student misses a quiz they receive a "0" for that quiz. If a student is late, but there is still time left, the student is allowed to take the quiz for the remaining allotted time (but no longer). I drop one or two quizzes at the end of the course prior to calculating their final quiz grade that is incorporated into their final course grade; 2) I have also taken 5% off of student's final grade for each tardiness; 3) I know faculty who lock the door at the beginning of class, not allowing students to enter late. However, I find this to be a bit excessive.

Totally agree with this. I will only give instructions once. I tell them it is their responsibility to obtain the information from someone else

Hi Sameerah,
That's right! No bending, enforce the rules so that students know that they will be held accountable for their actions.

These students should be handle strictly according to the office policies

I have an issues with students coming to class late. When then come on the first day. I explain that I will not repeat myself if you miss something. I do no thing that it is fair to my students that come to class on time for me to stop and catch the other up. So my motto is come to class on time.

Hi Doreen,
I fully understand! I do not believe in rewarding tardiness, this type of behavior will not be tolerated in the workplace. We are setting our students up for failure by rewarding their lateness! Punctuality is a must, and must be practiced in the workplace in order to be successful.

Hi Susan,
Implement a policy that they will get withdrawn from the class if the go over x amount of tardies. We have this policy at my institution, and it really reduces the number of tardies students get.

Tardiness is an issue where I work and the school has issued rules to aid this problem. We have attendence coupons that are issued at the end of each day. If a student was tardy than they were not in attendence for the day. At the end of the week a raffle is drawn and the student is awarded a nice gift (leather-bound case, backpack, etc). Also, time is taken off the student's 360 minute day; this affects their financial aid!!

However, I have found that by engaging students using scenarios from the work place, what would YOU do scenarios, and using groups with each student having a white board and markers lets them be creative with critically thinking and socialization; I can not get them to leave by the end of the day!!

I would NEVER reward a student, by any means, for tardy behavior! My students will work in doctor's offices or hospitals and they will NOT be awarded for tardiness. I pull up examples on how injury or even death has occured to patients because their caregiver was tardy!!

Also, rewarding tardy behavior causes dissention among the class members who are never tardy and never rewarded.

I have this problem, too. I teach a hands on class that is walked through in class. When a student comes in late they are really behind and that disrupts the whole class. What are good incentives to get them to come on time besides offering extra credit?
