"Alternative Students"
Does anyone have any suggestions for a late assignment policy when it comes to adult learners? I teach for an institution that consists primarily of non-traditional learners and find that the challenges they face are not the same as traditional students. This can include anything from sick children to homelessness. I don't want to discourage them as they are already at risk for dropping out.
Hi Jason,
You are very thorough! Your students should certainly appreciate you. I work with my students in extenuating circumstances, such as death, hospitalization, etc.

I have experience with many of these non-traditional students. The best thing I've found is to put all the deadlines on one class calendar. I put all the meeting dates into a 1 page calendar and on each day I write what we'll be lecturing on, what assignments will be due, and what in class activities/tests we'll have. This helps them know exactly what they'll be missing and when everything is due. If something does come up that fits into the "exceptional" category, I work with students on late assignments especially if it is a one time occurance.
