Hi Steven,
I am a firm believer that the instructor's excitement is contagious to the student!
Patricia

One of the methods I use is to show the students how excited I am about what we are doing. I try to make every lesson and activity as exciting as possible. I will speak loudly, smile, and show them just how great the lessons are and how the activity appies to a real life situation.

Hi Dale,
It is nice whenever we as educators can share relevant life experience with our students to motivate them. Students enjoy hearing our related stories.
Patricia

Hi Kerri,
What great ways to engage your students! I like the idea of the topic-of-the-day.
Patricia

Hi Dale,
Our students must learn how to be held accountable and take owernship for their own actions.

Asking my student what is your goal while are you here ? How can I help you reach your goal and from those few words the ownership is place on the students and I am their to guide or help them to achive their goal

It starts with my enthusiasm. It progresses with knowledge and experience.
Getting them motivated, hopefully, is never an issue. However, keeping them motivated through the work might be a bit more challenging.

Hi Lisa,
Setting a positive tone with energy and a smile upon entering the classroom really does help.

I also include a topic-of-the-day question with my greeting to engage the students and foster participation.

Some days, tired students or those focused on reviewing notes for a quiz or test may not acknowledge or respond to the cheerful greeting. It helps me to pull them in by taking exaggerated backward steps & re-entering with the same greeting and question.

Hitting the "rewind" button generally brings a smile to the faces of those who were previously "tuned out."

A method that I used to get my student to get them excited about the course content is to talk about one of my life experiences as I grew into the career it may have been a postive or negative experience and question them what would have they done different to avoid my personal pain or how would they react to doing a wonder thing for a customer

A method that I have in the past is role playing get the student excited about the course content Give them an example of real life experiences. I have found this method to be sucessful. Student tend to take ownership of the objective

Hi Patricia,
I am an advocate for the "hands on approach". It doesn't matter what subject matter I am instructing, I try to find a way to get the students involved through a group activity.

For example, if I'm lecturing on methods of production (printing, imposition, paper, etc.) I get my class to see the end result by having them paginate, stitch, and cover a book manufactured from their research reports.
While the computer may aid the process, much of what goes on behind the scenes is hand produced.

Thanks,
Erik

I tend to use a lot of real world examples of how the subject matter we are disacussing pertains to what will really happen in the workplace

Hi Adam,
This makes you think, If I knew then what I know now...
Patricia

Advise them how useful the knowledge will be to them in the future.

Hi Valerie,
It is a great thing to greet students. Students need to know that you care about them.
Patricia

Hi Phil,
Great strategy! Rumors can cause a lot of problems for students. I always tell my students to enter with an open mind and form their own opinon.
Patricia

Hi Derrick,
How do you express the relevancy of your course to your students' lives?
Patricia

Hi Gerry,
I am a firm believer that excitement starts from the top, such as yourself, and it is a trickle down effect. Normally if the program director is excited, the instructors will be excited, and if the instructors are excited, the students will be excited.
Patricia

At a general orientation, as the program director of dental assisting, I get introduced and talk about the loggevity of my career. My voice shows excitement about being in dentistry because of the patient care and the satisfaction you get from educating the patients about oral care.
On the first day I talk to the new students about all that they are going to learn and I keep my tone of voice always in check. I am excited about being in dentistry, and I let them know that again!!!!
