Hi Robert,
Your students are very fortunate to have you as their instructor. You can teach from a very real perspective and share applicable stories to the content.
Patricia
I have worked in the field I teach for the last 25 years so I find it easy to transfer relevance from the classroom to the field.
Hi Isaac,
Whenever students fully understand how the course is going to help them in the workplace they develop a keen interest in the course.
Patricia
By showing them procedures that they will be expected to carry out in the professional field. Demonstrating activities they will be performing with their patients. Putting it all together to demonstrate the applicability of their various tasks.
Highlight some skills and practices students will acquire after they engage in the course.
Outline some learning opportunities in course.
state specific ways in the course that will improve students success, for example, one on one discuss, tutoring, extra reading assignments, materials, how to use internate material, library.
Also help student to understand how the course requirement will improve their discipline which is a key to success in a workplace.
Concentrate on real world applications. Especially recent graduates of the same program. Seeing the value for that peer is a very powerful incentive.
We can show to the students that the course is relevant by giving them some examples of scenarios that they might encounter in the future as they practice their chosen career.
Hi Harvey,
Experience is truly the best teacher! You have practical experience to share with your students, which makes the lecture that much more exciting. Students love to hear our personal stories as they apply to the lesson.
Patricia
Hi Kimberly,
Nursing is very handson and students tend to go in knowing that they must thoroughly know the procedural techniques in order to succeed in the workplace.
Patricia
Hi Michelle,
Every opportunity you get to make a concept practical/real, take advantage of it. Students love it when we make the lesson applicable to the real world.
Patricia
Hi Carol,
I have been teaching in the industry since 1989, and I concur with you. This content serves as a wealth of information for new instructors, and add as a reinforcer to more seansoned instructors.
Patricia
Hi April,
I especially find this true with computer classes. They know how to utilize various features or how to do certain things, but they lack in the terminology area.
Patricia
Showing relevancy of course contaent can be done in several ways. This is a great chance for the students to become self directed and active learners. Course relvence can be shown in the following ways:
1. Creation of case stuies relvent to the class and real wold cases or experiences the students might come across.
2. Hands on activities also give relevance to the course content. They keep the students engaged and active as well.
A lot of times while teaching a class I have noticed that students have gone through a lot of the content, but had no terminology to describe it. Life experience is a great way to relate.
I started off not really being interested in this topic and the way it was presented. As I continued through the first two sections I started to feel more comfortable with the material and how it was presented. What made me feel much more comfortable was that I could relate to my methods of teaching and it reinforced what I am doing is obviously correct sine this program displays exactly what I do in teaching without my thinking the exact methods. Must be because I have lots of teaching and practical experience. I learned a long time ago that if you can place yourself in the student's situation "How would I feel" as I continue my classroom presentaions and are continually observing the students around the classroom as I am talking/lecturing and trying to keep the students focused.
I hope you received my reply of 6/27 to this question. The course content was excellent and covered so many areas that need to be addressed by new instructors and certainly some of the more experienced instructors who never understood or followed the tenets of good classroom management. As an instructor and Program Director in career schools since 1996, I have encountered all of the issues discussed. It was good to know I had been handling the "problems/issues" in an industry recognized and accepted manner.
I have been teaching in career schools and have been a Program Director/Developer since 1996. I found the course content very relevant to new teachers and helpful in re-inforcing many of the behaviors and tools I have developed for my teaching over the years.
Relevancy not only includes the content of the course, but it should include how the teaching is done in the class. My students are very kinethetic. They don't like or learn from long winded lectures. They like problems to solve. They love to critic each other's work. In other words, they like to work together to get the answers.
Hi Patricia,
One trick I utilize in my marketing classes is the "standard" student introductions where I ask them to share about their career and professional goals.
However, after everyone has shared, I have them pull out a piece of paper and write out all they can remember from different intros.
I make this a personal branding exercise and relate it to the importance for companies and nonprofits to stand out from the crowd.
It also makes the course relevant from day one for student career development.
Best wishes,
Rick
In our nursing program, this is often accomplished by skills lab, where we correlate skills directly to the study objectives from class. Also, stories of application from my experience helps bridge some knowledge gaps.
