Setting the stage for success
Setting the stage for success in my department, I encourage my Instructors to; get to know your students, let your students get to know each other ,respect and foster diverse ways of being/knowing/doing.,create a safe place for learning to occur: help students to fit in; relevant questions are OK; expectations for students and instructor, make the physical environment comfortable, and vary your teaching strategies to support different learning styles,
Being a first time teacher I really felt getting to know my students ws important, I started by introducing myself and having them introduce themselves. It felt like an ice breaker for all of us. What I found was by asking them questions on the first night of class it became an open forum for all of us to interact. I found some of the shy students by the 2nd or 3rd class were much more involved. I also brought in a guest speaker who started out as an A/R specialist and is now one of the top coders in the industry, she told the students how it can seem that success it a long time off but that the hard work they are putting in now is well worth it in the end. It was very encouraging for them
