Late Assignments
I liked the idea of deducting 20% each day an assignment is late. Although I would probably deduct only 10% I feel this is fair to all in the class. Those who complete an assignment on time get the credit yet those who hand it in late still get some points but get the penalty for handing it in late. It also shows that the instructor gives everyone a chance to succeed yet it's up to the student to do their part in contributing to their education. I will definitely start implementing this idea.
Hi Deborah,
Students need to be taught the importance of deadlines while in school. You are right, there are many things in life that have deadlines attached to them.

I agree, they sometimes tend not to have any concept of time. All jobs have deadlines and need to be kept, so Doctors can get paid on time and know when their money will be in the bank. Thus giving you a paycheck.
We have to renew things like drivers licenses, permits, pay bills on time, so being late on assignments has to have conquences to get the point across
I agree. Also in the real world, a deadline is a deadline, no late papers are handed in. I deduct 20% and more than a week will be a zero.
I also like the idea of giving the students a little extra time to get an assignment turned in. It seems more than fair to me that they would lose the 20% a day. I also think it is a good idea that the student have some form of documentation for missing class and/or not turing in the assignment. Employers do expect the documentation so I think it would be reasonable to expect the same for class.
Hi Carey,
I feel as though this is a great practice to have in place. In the real world not much leniency is given at all. We are in the business to educate our students so that they are prepared for the real world.
Patricia
I also deduct 10% for late work but this is only if the student can provide documentation for the late assignment or missed class period. No documentation for the absence is a zero. We are finding that in our industry more employers are requiring workers to provide documentation for missed days of work. If no documentation is provided, they are unable to use personal time or sick time for this missed day. We want to treat the students fairly but we also want them to be prepared for the work force policies.

Hi. I deduct 10 % per day and after 1 week the assigment is to late and will turn into a zero on the first day of class I review my syllabus and go over my syllabus and show the students how missing assigments will affect their grade.
Mrs. Harris
Hi Ann,
This is certainly more than fair. Your students should appreciate your leniency. In the real world not many second chances are granted.
