Late assignments
No matter what options I give my students it seems they never utilize them correctly.
My simple rule is this: Email me if you can not make it to class so that I can keep you up to date on the material.
I might get one person per class who cares enough to do this.
Hi Patricia,
Fair enough! Some instructors do not accept late assignments!

I discuss the policy for late homework as I deduct two points for eveyday it is late up to one week. After the week it is due I deduct 15 points everyday.
I think taking points off is a good idea. I prefer to take off 2 points for each day. It does not change the student grade a lot and at the same time conveys the message of time management to students.
This works especially with student who are grade seekers.
Hi Marissa,
At my institution we have a call in policy when students are going to be absent/late. We are trying to mold them for the real world. You must contact your employer if you are going to be absent/late.
Patricia
Yes i too have said call me do what you can to inform me of your absense so you wont be behind and they fail to do so as well.
Hi Dale,
I like your strictness! You do a fine job of preparing your students for the real world. Rules are made to be adhered to and not broken. Continue to enforce the rules so that quality graduates are produced.
Patricia
Im very strcit with late assignments. I make my due dates very clear from the beiggining and expect it to be done. I understand things happen in life and I will accept late work in a timely manner but only for partial points.
The students know my policy from the first day of class. When an assignment is due...it is due that day. No makeups for Quiz absence. Reports are due the date assigned. Absence for projects to be presented receives a zero. Per policy of the college...tests may be made up within 5 days of returning to class. The date the student chooses to make up a missed Test must be scheduled on the return date. Absences can slow an entire classroom from progressing. I am preparing the student for the real world. Better for me to teach the rules then the employer teaching the rules with job loss.
I grade my clinical students ever three weeks on a 12 week quarter and have the same problems no assignments turned in on time.
