Late Assignments

I have established a rule for all of my classes that specifically lays out the guidelines for submission of work.

If it is late due to an unexcused absence, it will not be made up. If it is for an excused absence, the student will have one week to make it up, but each day that it is late during that week is assessed a 5% penalty deduction.

After the 7th day, a grade of 0 is given.

I like and employ this model in my courses, the information is provided separately on the first day and highlights the penalty involved. The problem I often come up against is that the percentage of the grade that homework assignments have in each class does not really factor much in the overall grade. So even if a student does not submit a single homework assignment there is only a 10% decrease in the grade.

Hi Yvette,
Fair enough, as long as the students know about the rule on Day 1.

In my program we do not ecxept late assignments unles they where absent. For example if an assignment is due on Monday and student wasn't in class and returned to class on Tuesday. She would get a penalty of 10%. So the highest grade she would receive is 90%. If the student came to class on Monday and did not turn in her work we would not except the assisnment.

Hi Socorro,
I agree! Rules are for everyone, and not for just a select few.

Setting guidelines and deadlines puts a goal and a rule in effect for the student. Those who do not will face consequences and should be kept straight across the board for everyone.

Hi Kim,
You live and learn! You are learning! Enforce policies/rules!

I agree 100%, as a "NEW" Instructor, I seem to get the students that feel they can get over on me! Or in a diiferent example... I was trying to be lenient & give them a little slack. But that blew up in my face real fast!!! STICK TO THE RULES, NO EXCEPTIONS & LIFE IS EASIER!!! =0)

I agree, If you establish a rule regaurding late work early then the student dont question you when it is inforced.

I differentiate between "excused" & "unexcused" late work. I encourage my students to communicate with me in every aspect of the class due to the amount of students that I have. My "cut-off" is a week unless there is an extenuating circumstance, which they MUST communicate with me.

I like your plan. I use a 10% per day penalty but I don't currently have a distinction between "excused" and "unexcused". I think I will implement that next term.

Hi Jesse,
This has always been a challenge. Continue to have rules and enforce them if they are broken. I have come to realize most students will abide by the rules, others won't, and they will be reprimanded accordingly. It is like this in the real world too.

I also have a rule that lays out a guidelinefor submission of work. What I want to do, and would gladly accept suggestions, is to figure out a way to motivate adults to get assignments in on time or even within the late submission rule. I don't understand their lack of concern for timeliness. They don't seem to connect their classroom conduct with the real world of the working employee.
