Late Work

There should definitely be a penalty put in place for late work because it is highly unfair to those students that have worked hard to get their assignments in on time.

I have had a few issues with students turning in assignments late. At the time of every assignment I remind my students about my late policy. I accept assignments up to 1 week late, with a loss in points for each day. I require documentation as well for any days missed. Points are not assigned to that student's grade without it.

I really hate to get late work, causes me a hassle in reviewing the work with the students who returned their work ontime. And I have been the single mother, going to school, and working 2 and 3 jobs. I do let them hand in their assignments but points are deducted. And the goal is usually to get them thru the class and help them learn. It's hard to say no, but sometimes we have to.

Hi Billie,
You are very fair and thorough with your policy. I really like how you make your policy apply to the real world.

My late policy is clearly stated in my policy letter from Day 1. I work totally online. My students can turn in assignment for up to two weeks late. Turning it in one week late gets a 10 percent deduction. Two weeks late is a 20 percent deduction. I do not accept anything beyond that time frame unless it is a hospitalization, death, or life altering situation such as the birth of a child for the mother or a close family memember who must undergo treatment for cancer. I try to reflect the standards that would be held in the workplace. I also explain to my students that I need to be notified early on, not weeks after a situation has occurred. Most students will act in an adult manner when you are clear with your expectations.

I agree. The same rules should apply to everyone. Everyone should have a clear understanding of the rules after the first day of class.

I agree there definitely should be a penalty to students who do not turn their work in on time because it is unfair to those students who do turn their work in on time. Just as in the workforce there are consequences for work submitted late.

Hi Kevin,
I hold students whose work is late due to illness, child being sick, and childcare issues to the same rule. I only make allowances due to extenuating circumstances, such as hospitalization, death, fire, car accident, etc. with documentation as proof.

I DO UNDERSTAND MOST OF OUR STUDENTS HAS FAMILIES AND FULL TIME JOBS BUT THEY STILL NEED TO BE HELD AT ACCOUNTABLILITY AND RESPONSIBILITY. PEOPLE HAVE LET THEM SLIDE IN THE PAST THATS WHY THEY ARE STILL TRYING TO SLIDE BY. THEY SO NEED TO BE PENALIZED AND WE AS INSTRUCTORS SHOULD NOE HAVE TO ASK FOR LATE PAPERS.

I believe in implementing a late policy however that at times will need to be revised depending on the situation

Hi Cameron,
That's right! Totally unfair to not reprimand the students for turning in late work.

I agree. I know that in my class I hate late work. I in some classes get the excuse that oh I had to work and I had to take care of my children. In which I understand all cases however I have been there done that and if I didnt finish an assignment as a student mother working a full time job I took the zero in which my teacher did not take in any late work. I still let them hand in there assingment but for fewer points. I still want to give them an opportunity but without them walking all over the course.

If you give the students plenty of time to complete their assignments, accept their work early, and continually remind them of the deadline, then is should only on extremely rare occasions that missing a deadline is acceptable. This is how the "real world" jobs work.

I agree that there should be a penalty given to students who do not turn in their work on time. How do you deal with students whos work is late due to illness? Also, a lot of us may be teaching adult learners. What if an assignment is due to their kids being sick or needing care. Do the same rules apply?

I believe exceptions can be made but they should be clearly laid out in the syllabus.
