Invovelment of Ice Breakers?

Should Ice Breakers always involve small groups?

Hi Shirley,
I like it! How about allowing students to text the student beside them giving a brief introduction, and the student can read the introduction out loud to the class. Sounds like a great idea to me.

Well here is a good one since all students have their cell phones maybe we could figure out an ice-breaker using those.

Hi Jill,
I like the M&Ms icebreaker. Most students like plain/peanut M&Ms. Based on the number of M&Ms taken out of the candy dish, the student has to tell that many things about them, and they get to keep and eat the treat.

I do like the ice breakers for a new class. Some do start to repeat by the end, but I feel you just have to change it up or break them into groups. I do like the paper airplane suggestion.

I personally don't always like ice-breakers. If you have a large class by the time you get to #20 they all start to say and do the same thing.

Ice breakers, I think, are best realized when you can actually get the participation of the entire group regardless of the size. Afterall, this is the expectation of an ice breaker, right? In my experience, effective ice breakers allow individuals to let down their guard and have a more relaxed approach to dealing with the rest of the information received.

I dont think they must always be in small groups. If the size of the class is small it may be possible or necessary for it to be a whole group exercise. For me, the main goal is to design an activity that requires everyone to participate in some way.
