One of the things I do to encourage communication is that the student can get a 48 hour grace period IF they tell me in advance why it won't be ready. Otherwise, the normal late policy applies. It's often uncomfortable for the student to initiate that conversation, but it's a lot like calling ahead to the workplace if one is going to be late. It's part of how I try to avoid no call/no show situations in the classroom.

Wow, you are being more than fair in this case. Employers are sticklers for deadlines. We have to do our best to teach students the importance of deadlines.

With many of my adult learners, their schoolwork is their last priority, unfortunately. I weigh the quality of the response, and consider how late the actual assignment is. If I disallowed late assignments, I'd have no students, which is not the goal. My "rule" is their communication. If they don't correspond, they don't get the grade.

There are certain projects that I tell students that they will not be accepted if turned in late, but to be honest, I will make exceptions in extenuating circumstances with appropriate documentation, such as death, fire, hospitalization, accident, etc.

I mainly teach adult learners so my expectations are a bit different. I write into the syllabus that late work is generally not excepted. The students can always turn an assignment in early, which is always acceptable. Each student must contact me directly whether by phone or e-mail informing me as to why he/she cannot turn in the assignment. Certain projects are never accepted late and there is no exception.
