You have 20 minutes

I have always said that an instructor has 20 minutes to share all the requirements about a course's content. capturing a student's attention during these 20 minutes to relate important material is a life saver.

Hi Phyllis,
Super exercise. It is amazing what students can do within a short time frame.

Hi Rosalind,
Even adult students need frequent breaks in order to keep them engaged.

Following a class session regarding employment preparation in the leadership course I teach I conclude the days class with the following 20 minute activity: I distribute 5 different topics for 5 different group questions to be discussed and then presented to the total class- they have 20 minutes. Each topic has 5 questions: example Group I list 5 relevant considerations prior to making formal application to a specific employee organization. Each of the 5 student groups has a different employment related topic . In the 20 minutes each group must select quickly a group facilitator, recorder, and reporter of their conclusions to the class at large. Phyllis Crownover

I do agree that 20 minutes is about all you have befor the student has lost intrest. I get out as much information as I can within that periord followed with a quick break of topic and lead back in more information. I seems to keep the student focused on the topic.

I have found that at times it requires the entire length of the course to hold students attention. I have had numerous students approach me upon completion of a course and acknowledge their approval and inform me that "it was not what they had expected and that they had really enjoyed it."

Barbara,

What are the the most important things you highlight in your 20 minutes? After your 20 minutes do you begin teaching?

Hi Barbara,
We have to make an impression in a very short period of time on Day 1. Students are very judgmental.
