Setting the standard

Teachers need to lead by example. Students watch every move you make. If you are late getting to class they will also be late. If you take too long to grade and return work, they will not turn work in on time. Have the same expectations for yourself as you would for them.

Hi Aki,
As instructors we should certainly be the professionals that we want our students to become.

I agree, since most instructors have expectations of the students we should lead the way! The Military has provided me with a simple philosophy “Lead, Follow, or get out of the way!” You either lead the student by example or you set a bad example and now they are following a bad example then they assume this is acceptable. Finally if you lack in providing the proper example a self evaluation can get you back on track.

I could not agree more. My class hasn't even started yet and students are already putting out feelers for what kind of instructor I will be. I'm aiming for fair but firm. My biggest goal is to be consistent with them so I will get the same back in return from them.

I agree with these. I believe that you should practice what you preach. This in turn helps set up the student for the real world expectations, and helps build work ethic.
