As a new instructor coming into an established program, how do I keep the students from looking at me as an outsider?

Hi Stacey,
It is human nature to be somewhat nervous in the beginning stages of teaching. As time progresses, you will develop so much confidence, you will be able to teach with ease and peace.

I had the same fears when I first started teaching and the advice given will help you work through this time and it will also help build up your confidence that you are in this position because you have the skills and the knowledge to help your students be successful in the career they have chosen. You will be great. I also believe in the ice breakers and getting to know your students this helps to reduce the anxiety felt by the student as well as being a new instructor. Always keep the line of communication open and be up front with your expectations from each student.

Hi Brian,
I will look at it more so of being new and not isolate yourself. As long as you are professional, knowledgeable, respectful, and treat all fairly, you problems will be minimal.

Hi Kisha,
Students tend to do better when they are in an environment where they are comfortable with the instructor and their classmates.

Hi Clint,
Students will not look at you as outsider as long as you treat them with respect, you demonstrate professionalism, show them that you are knowledgeable, and treat all fairly. They will welcome you with open arms.

Accept that you are an outsider, you can't change that fact. Allow actions to speak louder than words. Most importantly, maintain your professional composure.

by having activities that will or may break the ice for you and the students... some activities that allow you to get to know the students on a level thats beyound the subject matter...then have them the students to work on these activities in small groups so that they are getting to know their classmates as well.
