late work
There was no established rule in my sylibus to address late assignments. When a late submission occurred, I was caught without a plan. Unaware of a school policy on the issue, i improvised but then needed to append the sylibus so all would have the same understanding.
I agree. Why should those who do their work and turn in as scheduled be penalized. By giving those who don't turn in their work on time no type of repercussions, then we are really just telling those who do turn in their work on time that it was not that important they meet the deadline.
I do agree. Students who do not turn in their work ontime should not be given special treatment.
Hi Lulu,
I am sure your students know that you are not playing, if their work is not in the baseket they will receive a zero. We have to hold our students accountable because in the real world it is NO CAKE WALK.

My students know what day and time their homeworks are due. They turn it in a basket the beginning of class. I collect the homework usually about 10mins after class has started, anything not turned in will receive a zero.
Are syllabus states that no late assignments are accepted. We Give due date reminders and also write them on the board so that all the students can see. Students need to understand when they are working and have deadlines, things need to be done. You dont get a percentage docked from your work ethic.
Hi Samuel,
You are right! Consistency is key, and then there is no questioning on fairness when you are consistent.

I too used to give alot of time for students to turn in the assignments. I also make them accountable if they are late on a lab day. They will not be able to score the same in the lab overall grade as their partners did who were present for the whole session. You have to stay consistant for all students and you will have less problems.
When I first started teaching I use to hound the students who did not turn in assignments. I was under the impression that all students were there to learn and obviously they just forgot to turn in their assignment because they were distracted.
I have since learned that some will turn them in early, some ontime, and others when they feel like it. If you do not have some guidelines established for late assignments those individuals who are late will never turn in the assignments. I like the reducing of points until the assignment is turned in or the zero is reached.
I think the lesson was harder on me then the students. I could not even imagine paying for a class and then getting a zero. Boggles the mind.
Hi James,
Students should have some type of repercussion for turning work in late. I take off 10 points if the work is late on the first day, and an additional 5 points up to the fourth day, after the fourth day the student receives a zero.
