Setting the Stage for Success

I was somewhat put off initially by the excessive use of abbreviations in this course because it made comprehension of the material very difficult. Once I got beyond that I found this course to be an exceptional resource for someone like me who has an experiential background versus an educational background.

I now have a much better idea about how to design and present a course syllabus and get my students engaged from the very 1st class.

Hi Marilyn,
It sounds like you make good use of your students time. Continue to serve your students well.

I have a different situation. I am an ajunct instructor for a grad student class. They have graduated but are in clinic seeing patients for enrichment. We have a orientation in the begining to review the clinic course. The responsibilities are different then in regular clinic. I'm putting together a colored flyer with the most important points like attendance. They act like they can come and go and don't need to attend or do work. We request that they work on models, study for written boards or work on other things to use the time wisely.

Hi Amy,

Some things I like to do are a few ice breakers to get to know the students and the students can get to know you too!

The syllabus is an important tool within the class, I use it every time I am in class, I also ask the students to pull it out, and have them tell me when assignments and projects are due, this way, they are also reading it themselves.

Thanks,
Kelsey

Hi Amy,
The first day of class sets the tone for the entire grading period. Make a strong presence on Day 1.
