Late work

I never really thought about how turning your work on time for students helps them understand that at their job this won't float if you don't do it. i know at work we need to, but letting the students undersatnd that will help them get the point. I also loved the topic on Psychomotor

Hi Jeremy,
Rules must be established and strictly enforced when it comes to students not meeting deadlines.

Patricia Scales

That sound like a very good approach for late work.

Hi Hossai,
I agree! We can not let students just skate by with everything in college because in the real world skating is not going to work.

Patricia Scales

I also believe being firm about time management while they are in school will help them prepare for their new career.

I couldn't agree more about stressing the point that the work force will not accept inability to meet a deadline. The classroom should not be any different.

I have the same problems with late work as all of you. My students are very split between those who never turn it in late and those who never turn it in on time. This is my first term teaching and I made a hard rule of once it is late you only get half the points. I never set a hard line on when you can no longer hand in assignments for half credit. I like the rule about losing 20% each day and after a week there is no credit. As the semester is winding down I find myself recieving assignments from the beginning of the semester and I have to look back to see what the assignment was worth and find it in my gradebook. This approach is so much better and will allow me to only recieve assignments in a timely fashion.

Hi David,
I concur! Some students feel as though they should be privy to turning in work late without penalty.

Patricia Scales

Agreed. I always thought of it more as being unfair to the other students who hand their work in on time.

Hi Casey,
Great policy to have in place to promote timeliness.

Patricia Scales

My institution is just the same. Students are required to complete their CA prior to course completion and if they are not, the student will fail that course and have to repeat it.

Hi ROBBYN,
I concur! The feelings are mutual! I can tell you are a stickler for policies. We are not doing these students any favors by being lenient with late assignments.

Hi SUZANNE,
Email is a lifesaver! Most students utilize email to their advantage. If they don't come to school, they will email their work so that they can get full credit.

Patricia Scales

Hi Carla,
You may have to make a sacrificial lamb out of someone. Students will take advantage of you,if allowed. At my institution, we fail them if they do not turn in their competencies on time.

Patricia Scales

I currently do not accept late work. However there are competency assessments (CA) that have to be completed and passed prior to passing the course! The students have learned that the CA must be submitted and passed before I can enter grades or pass the student; so they turn those in late often. Any suggestions. I cannot say I wont take them because it is required to complete the course.

Aside from students running late, trying to turn in assignments late annoys me the most. I have been working since I was 15 years old and time management is something that is very important to me. Developing patience for unprepared students has been my biggest hurdle. As far as I'm concerned there is no good exception for having late work other than being sick. I understand unexpected things arise but not every day. Students need to be held accountable. I am actually attending school myself and I have a few class mates who know that they only lose 5 points for a late assignment, so every week they turn the assignment in late. When they get out into the workforce turning work in late will not be acceptable. I believe being firm about time management while they are in school will help them prepare for their new career.

Hi Mitchel,
Absolutely! Everything I do with my students I try to get them to see it from a work perspective.

I know it the beginning of the term I usually explain to my students about turning work in on time. I explain that they need to be professional and that it is a prime example of work ethics. I continuously remind them of that as well. Some students seem to get it and actually have turned their work in early. There are a few that just don't get it. They continuously turn their work in late. When my students turn their work in late, I deduct 10 points each class it is late. I have also implemented the use of email. I have suggested my students to send me an attachment via email of their work. I have actually seen a great improvement since then. I have students that have been absent and submitted their work via email so it is in on time.

I'll start relating deadlines to work situations.

Hi Raphael,
Anytime you can relate school situations as to how that will work on the job, these are perfect teachable moments.
