THE Secret to Learning
When asked what is the best way for learning to occur, there is plenty of research that points to relevance...what's in it for me. While this may sound selfish, it is the essence of learning. If we want our students to maximize their learning, make sure they can see relevance in their lives and as effective instructors it is our responsibility to facilitate that.
I agree, and would add something else: I think it's my responsibility as a teacher to show the students how what they are learning in my class extends beyond my classroom. I think this ties in with what you are saying, Richard. If students realize that regardless of the class topic/focus, they are being armed with valuable skills--analysis, problem solving, critical thinking--that can be taken into other classes or into the workforce, then they will feel they are getting more out of the experience. Students will hopefully see that what's in it for them are tools/skills that will be useful throughout their lives. I like to keep the skills in mind almost as much as the course content.
Hi Richard,
This is the one time it is okay to be selfish. We have to let the students know what is in the course for them.
