Adjusting Time
We all have dealt with holidays and other reasons for time lost during a term. How can we adjust to still cover all the material without overwhelming the students?
Hi Colby,
I like to find my own sub, and if there is information to be taught I find someone that can teach the material.

We also have this problem with our institution. When I miss a day of class for any reason I look over my material from the day missed and pick out the most important/hardest to understand information then make sure to cover it. I usually assign the other information for readings and discussions. Any other ideas?
Hi Natalie,
Nice way to adust missed time. The students still got what they would have gotten. At my institution we have to make up holidays, therefore we do not have to worry about time adjustment. We also have to make up inclement weather days.

This year I also had to re-configure my class calendar because of a holiday. The missed day just happened to be on a scheduled test day.
I contemplated several ideas to this dilemma. First, I thought I would give a take home test which would require making a new test and would create additional time for me to grade, plus it would also interfere with the students holiday which they were not in favor of. My second idea was to take my original exam and break it down into 3 quizzes and I gave them each week at the beginning of class following the previous lecture. Basically I turned the exam into 3 quizzes, the students all voted and agreed and this worked out nicely for all.
This is also a problem for us. This term we have to deal with several holidays (Memorial Day, July Fourth and Labor Day). It is not an option for us to do make-up days on the weekends. I would love to hear any suggestions. Currently, we have had to resort to cutting content that may not necessarily be essential, but would enrich the student's experience.

Hi Sue Ellen,
At my institution we make up holidays on a Saturday.
