use wiifm (whats in it for me )the student will be more likly to listen if they think that the information will help them in there career
My career experience starts the conversation but I often have students outside of my course topic who hang back. With these students I have found using the textbook web site and then a tie in with practical experience will draw the adult student into the conversation.

It must be more difficult for those who teach general ed. It is a bit easier for me to relate human anatomy to health care students. I've noticed text books now have case studies that help relate the course to wiifm.
