Late Assignments
I've had trouble in the past being firm about this issue. I very much enjoyed the suggested solutions to quickly deal with this problem.

Sean, I know what you mean!! Relating real world examples for the students I teach, once realized, is a powerful tool to timely submission of work. I let students know how I live their work aspirations daily and can relate consequences of lateness!! Understood!!

I do not accept late assignments at all from my students. The students know this and are great about turning in assignments on-time. I have been able to avoid this from becoming an issue by passing out a calendar with assignment name and due date. I also write up on the white board if there is an assignment due for that particular week.
I find this issue to be a balancing act. When I am concrete with my rules, many of my students don't meet expectations. On the other hand when I am too lenient, I pay the price with grading late assignments and explaining the assignment over and over. I really like the idea of the points be reduced over time.

Continue to set high expectations for your students. Some will rise to the expectations and others will just settle! Set the bar high!!!

I do not necessarily agree with your comment Sean. I expect a lot from my students; however, I do not always get everything I expect.
