Setting Rules for the class

It si our responsbilty to set our rules on the first day of class, make sure it is written inside the class syllabus and post it on the class wall. Teachers should make their rules known to the student not after 2weeks of class, teachers has to be firm becasue students know how to manipulate their ways .

Hi Terri,
The first day is crucial, and it certainly sets the pace for the remainder of the grading period. On day 1 you must be all about business to make a strong presence and show your firmness.

Patricia Scales

i agree with the first day of class should be very firm and show the students your class time is very important with information and time of class is valuable.

Hi Jillian,
You are right adult college students can have very childish ways at times. Enforce your cell phone policy, and students will stop abusing it.

Patricia Scales

In my first two weeks of teaching I have already had a handful of students try to ignore or get around the rules of the classroom, which shows that even college students, aka adults are capable of the same things as children in secondary school. It is important to be extremely firm with students about the rules. Cell phone rules in particular are extra difficult to implement with all of the technological accessibility that comes along with them. Students will even go as far as to tell me that they are using their calculators on their cell phones (since I teach math) as if that is a legitimate excuse, while my rules firmly state no cellphones in class.

Hi Amy,
I agree, a very strong presence has to be made on Day 1, and you have to keep that firmness throughout the grading period.

I agree it is so important to make sure students know who is in control. If you clarify your behavioral expectations and learning objectives the first day, class will tend to run smoother. It also may take reminding the students from time to time throughout the semester as well.

Hi Wendy,
Clarity is a must, and students must know that the instructor is in control, not them. Sometimes you have to put students back in their place so that they will no who has the control.

I agree. I have had a problem with students thinking they run the class instead of me.Rules have to be clear!
