First day in class

I have incorporated some of the methods discussed in this course, and i feel that giving information that is clear and to the point helps students feel like they have a clear pathway to having best chances of passing the course.

Hi Elaine,
Thanks Elaine! I love teaching! It sounds like you enjoy it as well. Continue to strive to be one the best educators ever.

Patricia Scales

I agree that the first day of class is very important. I have tried many of the ideas mentioned and you have given me more ideas to add on to my list. You are very thorough and insightful. Thanks, Elaine

Hi Michael,
You are very thorough! You are certainly on point with the things you do on Day 1. I am sure your students gain great clarity on Day 1.

Patricia Scales

The first class is important. In fact, it is not overstating to say it is critical to the success of your course. The students arrive, often as individuals who do not know each other. And they have some anxiety, some fear, of not knowing whether they fit in, be able to master the subject, enjoy it, be humiliated, be frustrated, be bored, or whether the adult learning situation will be too hard for them.
And from that unrelated, anxious, skeptical gathering of individuals, you as the Instructor have to put it all together and make them a group for a term or quarter, get them to know one another, establish a relationship with them, excite them about the subject they will be learning, and encourage them to return for the next time.
Here is a sample worksheet covering all aspects of the first day.
1. Welcome by me the Instructor
2.Introducing Myself
3.Students' Introduction
4.Ice-Breaker
5.Assessing Learner Needs (Why did you come/Why
are taking this course
6.Introduction of Subject/Course / Topics
to be covered
7.Break
8.Student Involvement / Project
9.Summary
10. Personal Evaluation of first session or first
day by students. And there are other things I
do also. Finally I will introduce or tell the students my style of teaching to be used as well.

Hi LaKeisha,
Students need to be told rules, policies, and procedures on Day 1, the sooner the better.

Patricia Scales

It helps them get the understanding right off hand.
