Ready to Quit

I value the suggestions for interacting with a "ready to quit student." I try to encourage students across the board, but as I see students lack motivation or have complancency to do average or below average work, I hope to avoid dismissing the chance to reverse this.

What to do about the signs that a student is about to drop out? Missing classes and basic inattention. I've tried e-mailing these types of students before "the end", always to no avail. Is there any way to retain them or could it be they are not cut out for college?

Hi Jeremy,
You are certainly shooting straight with the student. She has to make up her mind to want to finish what she has started. You can talk all day long, but the ultimate decision is hers.

I have a student who is in the third term of a five term program in which the final term is an externship. So, basically she is almost halfway done with an expensive AS degree program.

Her reason for leaving is valid because she has decided on a career change. The student also has another Associates' degree in another area of study.

I am having trouble convincing her to stay in the program. I give her reasons like she will waste the money that she's already spent, but mainly that I want her and her future employers to see that she has "finished what she started."

Is this a good line of reasoning for her, or should I tell her something else?

Hi Lisa,
Any sign of frustration with a student should be addressed. Students will fall off the face of the earth quickly.
