Day one
I have found it to be very helpful to inform my class on the first day the penalty for late assignments and examinations. I post on the student's portal an extra document dealing with these issues and what situations will allow the student to make up an examination.
Not only do I go over the syllabus on day one and the expectation of the class I also discuss professionalism and the manner if they are not going to make it to class. I give students the option of emailing me or notifying another member of the class as the reason for their absence. This has significantly reduced the amount of absenteeism in my classes as they treat the class like a job.
Hi Manuel,
Holding students accountable to meet deadlins is a good rule to practice. In the real world deadlines must be adhered to.

I like to give them a pass on the first week after that it game on. I try to be very strict on deadlines.
I give syllabus and explain the students in detail how the class will run for the rest of the semester.
Hi Lynda,
Students need very clear requirements as to what is expected of them. Clarity brings about success.

I think this is HUGE! Along with absenteeism, professionalism, or any other areas of grading. I have found it helpful that the clearer I am the more successful and prepare my students are. I was really able to relate to some of the videos in the training because going down the Syllabus, identifying those expectations really helps students be aware and become prepared.
Hi Joan,
It is best to let your students know on Day 1 exactly what is expected of them so that they are not in for any surprises.
