The whole purpose of being in school is to learn. Learn to be disciplined and puctual in order to be successful in thier professional carreer. So i believe when a student turn sin late assignment he/she should be penalized by assigning another assignment from which they can learn.
I grant Punishment in the form of percentage off across the board. Also grant percentage off for the student coming late to class and explain when you work in healthcare being late sets a pace for the person you are to relieve to have to pick up your work also comes anger with that do to the fact you are not carrying your load. After three It can cost you your job so . I have started popping a quiz on students that come in late and for late assignments along with percentage off. Seems to work..

We must remeber that we are not only teaching students subject matter but training them to be good employee's. I am very clear and stricted about work assignments. They must be done on time to recieve credit. The only time a student can be late is spelled out in our rules and regulations, which we go over at the beginning of every term. Be firm, the instructor steers the ship, not the students.

I tend to be lenient with late assignments and it does cause a mess on my end having to grade and keep track of these assignments. Often, I hold on to them, or students are absent when I try to return them.
I am going to try to stick to my late policy. 10% late per day, up to 3 days. Assignments not accepted after that date (w/o legitimate documentation).
I know that once students see that I stick to this policy, they are more likely to comply with due dates. However, I still have my personal issue with grading, returning, and keep track.

Punishment needs to be granted when necessary. You can certainly give more work as form of punishment as long as you are consistent and fair with all.
