Set expectations early.

When I receive a new group of students I always set my expectations from the beginning. I take students into the operating rooms at different hospitals. I emphasize professional behavior at all times. I find that students who know what the expectations are for their own behavior in the O.R. environment helps to establish boundaries in the hopes they will not approach them. It is better to start out strong and ease up when they understand these expectations. If you start out easy and then try to get stronger after something happens it is already too late.

Hi Murielle,
Let students know up front exactly what is expected of them so that there are no surprises.

I agree, setting expectations from the start makes it easier for students to manage the course work in a timely fashion

Students seem to relax more when they know what to expect in the courses that I teach. I try to make each segment of the class clear to students so that they know what expectation are needed in Labs and what presentations are included.

Hi MICHELE,
When students know exactly what is expected, things do not come as a surprise.

Hi Jona,
Great practice to follow. You have to begin to train your students on Day 1.

I agree also. It is very important to set expectations early in the program for students so that the students are aware up front which tends to limit any confusion on the completion end of the course.

I got this same tip from an experienced instructor when I started. I did not understand it at the time, but I have seen that it is so true!
Thanks for the reminder.

Hi Rickey,
I concur! Strictness goes over better when you start out that way!
