Late assignments
I'm a math instructor for an online college. Students complete their assignments on the school website. That's another layer of learning for the students. At the very first day of class, I tell the students to ask any question they want. There is no stupid questions in my classroom. I rarely receive a question regarding how to navigate the assignment website. However, when I ask why a particular student about his/her late assignments, I often get answers about the difficulty of navigating the site. What do I do to help the students to ask questions right away when they encounter difficulties in how to use their assignment website?
Hi Theresa,
Okay, if this is your practice fine. They key is to be fair to all.

I also instruct an online course, and my students frequently request extensions on assignments due to illness, etc. I pretty much grant extension based on the student's overall participation in the class.
Hi Deborah,
Students need to know up front what the requirements are so that there are no surprises later.

I inform my students at the very beginning of a course that all information, including assignment description, can be found on Engrade, with due date.. I encourage pertinent questions ASAP, to lessen confusion about the assignment.
Hi Arlissa,
What you meant was very clear and well understood.

I am glad you understood what I meant. I noticed some typos in my text.
Hi Joseph,
Give step-by-step as to how to navigate the website. Let your students know on Day 1 that not knowing how to navigate the website is unacceptable, also let them know you will help them learn how to navigate the website, but it must be before the deadline of an assignment.

Hi Arlissa,
Great idea! Students should certainly appreciate this type of gesture.

You can create a mock or test assignment with a due date so everyone can receive practice at navigating the site correctly to . Any questions that come up should act as help for the students to avoid errors or mistakes when the deadline for a assignment is real.
