Late or missed assignments
I feel that when a student misses an assignment they should be responsiable to make it a point to schedule a time to make it up. If they do not it is on them not you to remind them of what they missed when they were out.
If you give a dead line for an assignment, it is the students responsibility to hand it in on time. Points should be taken off for work turned in late.
Hi Bonnie,
Love it! You hold your students to very high standards. You really get from students what you expect.

My policy on late or missed assignments is in writing and is handed out on day one. It is also posted on the bulletin board. Major assignments have a grading rubric, which deducts points for the assignment being late.
I do not accept late homework. Students have one week to submit it electronically. That is sufficient time. Time management is an important skill for post-secondary students.
Hi Susana,
Yes, our students need to learn that they are going to be held accountable and deadlines are made to be adhered to, not broken.

I agree with you but i think their mixed feelings comes because either they didnt understand the rules or what was outline in the syllabus, or they have not read the syllabus, or pretty much they are used to what they used to do in highschool and they dont want to change. Overall i think enforcing the deadlines gives them feedback on how they are doing on the course faster and also teaches them responsibility.
Hi Jody,
You will become tougher the more you teach! Remember you must control your students, if you don't control your students they will control you, and things will quickly get out of hand.

Hi All,
I must confess, this, and over all class discipline has not been my strongest suit. Though, I am learning. And do see, if I don't take a strong leadership position, someone else, an alpha student type, will, as mentioned somewhere in one of the lectures. That losing control, even briefly, is very unpleasant and embarrassing. So maybe, hopefully, I can incorporate some of the good ideas I've learned here.

Hi Godwin,
Don't let students play a guilt trip on you. When they do not adhere to guidelines, reprimand them according to your rules.
Patricia Scales
My experienced has been mixed. Some students are very time conscious and keep to deadline. Other react negatively when you try to enforce deadline. They come up with various excuses and regard you as insensitive when you try to do the right thing.
Hi Kendalle,
I concur! Our students need to be held accountable and learn a sense of responsibility.
