late assignments

As an instructor, I give plenty of time to complete assignments. I understand that students have other obligations, work and family, but in the "real world" a deadline is a deadline. If it's not complete, its a zero.

Hi JULIO,
You really get from students what you expect.

Patricia Scales

I have a deadline for every assignment listed in the syllabus. In there, I also disclose that I accept no late assignments resulting in a zero for that particular assignment. I go over this rule the very first day of class, and it works great. Students become accountable for completing their assignments on time.

Hi Tonaya,
I concur! Instructors need to cerrtainly lead by example. Students really do watch our every move.

Patricia Scales

I agree. Meeting deadlines is important and assignments are a great way to get students familiar with their responsibilities.
In addition, I think it's important that I keep to my deadlines when returning their work. If I say it will be returned in the next class - I need to make sure I return their graded items at that time. Otherwise, I'm not setting a good example.

Hi Rolina,
Yes there is much to be learned from students doing assignments. You also get to determine those that are willing to work hard and those who aren't willing to put forth efferot.

Patricia Scales

Assignments are a great way to observe students and gain insight into their behavior and demeanor. Assignments given in the first few weeks provide an opportunity to interact with students and identify students who may be struggling early on.

Hi Tina,
Fair enough! You do a fine job with ensuring when work is due, and you also go above by giving a reminder.

Patricia Scales

With the class syllabus created by me, I add the dates the homework is due. There is no reason why it should not be done given ample time. If its not done its a zero unless documentation is given regarding a medical issue or something hindering the completion.

Hi Keith,
Yes, students need to understand that for every choice there is a consequence.

Patricia Scales

Hi April,
That's right! This is just a matter of being fair!

Patricia Scales

Hi JIMMIE,
Absolutely! Everything we do in the classroom should be centered around the real world.

Patricia Scales

It's important to hold the students accountable.

I agree. Late assignments should never get equal credit as students who actually put forth effort and turned in on time.

There is an obligation to not only teach the student suject matter, but to relate it to the
'real world'. As an employer over the years, I
often graded the school by the students who
eventually I employed.

Hi Felix,
Students that turn in late work should have points deducted. They are lucky they are allowed to turn in the assignment at all.

Patricia Scales

Hi Sue,
You are right! In the real world not meeting deadlines will not be tolerated. We need to hold our students accountable to their deadlines.

Patricia Scales

The "other obligations" is a given. Late assignments will have a percentage deducted on top of how many questions are answered incorrectly. Performance evaluation grades have a direct affect on class participation and assignments.
