Hi Christina,
What type of problems have you experienced with your students whenever it comes to entitlement?
Patricia

Entitlement has become not only a problem in the classroom but in the workplace as well. We assist our students in becoming successful in the workpalce by making sure we are consistent in the classroom and holding them accountable at every step in their learning.

The most challenging students are the ones I cannot get engaged. I have found that on the first day of class if I can have each one tell me one thing they would want me to know about them, I can leverage this throughout the course to let them know I can identify them and relate to them.

Hi Barbara,
Students fully understand the relevence of common documents, such as letters, reports, emails, memos, etc. They tend not to mind this type of document writing because they understand how the documents can benefit them in their career.
Patricia

Hi Warren,
There are some students that are very experienced in certain areas, therefore the instructor needs to make sure they are very knowledgable about the subject matter.
Patricia

The student that thinks the class is awaste of time and does not want to be there. I try to determine there learning style first. then T find professional ways to challenge them. either by technical questioning or lab assignment. It seems to work very well and the student usually becomes a very good student and becomes more involved. As an instructor you need to be on top of the class you very well may be challenged.

Hi Barbara,
Do the best you can. Learning how to deal with different students comes with time. Experienced instructors can help you in this area as well. Talk to your veterans at your institution whenever various situations come about.
Patricia

Hi Barbara,
Even as college educators, I feel as though it is still very important to show our students some TLC.
Patricia

Hi James,
Nicely responded to! You sound like a Psychology major. :-) I like how you go about having the student take ownership. Students should be held accountable.
Patricia

Most challenging is the student (or group of students) that feel he/she/they are above and beyond the class . . . or uninterested/don't care. In these rare cases, once identified, I take action to mentally not allow the student/students from "getting to me" . . . guarding against altercation of my teaching style or learning expectations. Continuing to expect the best, I will "level" with the student at the first available opportunity. Behavior is often an indicator of life circumstances . . . and if behaviors are not consistent with expectations, there must be a reason (some out of my scope/reach . . . or inability to address within the short timeframe of the course). Discussing how to best work together, and asking the student to assist with problem-solving, allows the student to take ownership, viewing the discussion as a call for collaboration. Being sincere, honest, and consistent helps the student to help themselves. If the student allows you into their world, listen and acknowledge, but also give them a glimpse into your world. Jim

I can see how easy it could be for a student to just sit there and do nothing; however, I find that sometimes just a small bit of attention guides how the student will focus in on class. A lot of students feel they have had a bad day and now they have to go and sit for hours in a night class. I try to stay on track with the lesson, but also give each student a little TLC.

It is hard to admit when we are new teachers in the class room that we don't know a lot of the answers on how to deal with different students. I believe these strategies will help me also.

My most challenging students are those who don't see the relevance of an English class to their majors. (I teach at a career college)As a result, they are inattentive and often distracting to others in the classroom.

I do a couple of things to address this. The most effective technique is to tie the work they are doing in my class to the career they want to have. If we are working on persuasion papers, I talk about the kinds of persuasive writing they will do in their work lives, including sales proposals, marketing materials, advertisement copy, and business proposals.

I often give small assignments that require them to research their major fields of study and find specific documents they will need to write. Incorporating business writing like e-mails, memos, and letters into the composition class is also effective because they can see the relevance.

Hi Susan,
You're right! Some leaders can be very intimidating. Great points made. It is best to observe and then move forward based on the observations.
Patricia

Hi Donald,
It is amazing how a quiz or test can get a student's attention quickly. This tactic is old, but it still works. We have to do whatever it takes to grab our students attention.
Patricia

Hello Jennifer,
The inattentive student does need a lot of guidance. As educators, we must provide as much guidance as possible to these type of students. We simply have to take them under our wings.
Patricia

Hi Sara,
Wow, how disrespectful of a student to talk on the cellphone while you are lecturing! Do not put up with this type of behavior. At my institution, we have a cell phone policy. If it makes a sound during class, the student must leave class, and it counts as an absence.
Patricia

Hello Vanessa,
Students with excuses...they can be very challenging. I have had private conversations with these type of students, simply to let them know that the employer is not going to put up with their many excuses, and they need to take responsibility for their own action.
Patricia

Hi Peter,
I teach from the perspective that no one knows anything about the subject matter so that I can reach ALL students. If you teach at a level that is too challenging for most, you are going to lose, frustrate, discourage, etc a lot of students. Teach on a level so that everyone should be able to grasp the material.
Patricia

Hi Patricia,
You are on point! Whenver students can understand the WIIFM, they realize the seriousness of their education.
