CENTER STAGE
I HAVE A CENTER STAGE STUDENT IN MY CLASS THAT BRINGS A LOT TO THE TABLE. THE OTHER KIDS LOVE HIM AND THE DISCUSSIONS HAVE BEEN BENEFICAL TO EVERYONE. I MAKE SURE WE STAY ON TRACK AND THAT EVERYONE UNDERSTANDS THE ASSIGNMENTS. I FEEL HE HAS HELPED THE WHOLE CLASS.
I have, for the most part, had positive experiences with center stage student's and they can be very helpful to other students in class.
Hi Corey,
I like the idea of the que. I use this method as well. It works beautifully!

I think it has to be a balancing act...some can really contribute, but, some may like to hear themselves talk and that can be a problem. Some students are quiet and give up trying to involve themselves in discussions. One technique in facilitation I utilize is a que...if people want to talk, identify who they are and say you are 1, you are 2 and you are 3.....that helps keep people from interrupting and sets a structure that everyone will get to talk and respect the time they have. That helps curb the center stage.
Hello Richard,
I always try in every way possible to give the center-stage student a leadership role that will be both benefical to he or she and the other students.
Patricia
Many times, with my Center Stage Students, I will request that they assist me with observations and/or as a leader in reading or discussion of an article. This seems to engage the student yet also facilitating staying on the topic with the other students.
Hi Margaret,
It is fine for this student to get extra attention from you, but not at the expense of the other students. Maybe you need to have a chat with the center stage student privately to let him know you are there for him, but....., and explain to him that you can spend extra time with him after class.

I have a center stage student who makes comments in class that cause other students to roll their eyes. I feel bad for this student. I know he needs some extra attention from me, which I have no problem with giving, but I wish other students could get to know him without all the "schtik".
Hi Jana,
Center-stage students can be a positive benefit to the class. Whenever these type students are positive benefits to the class, we as educators need to let the student share the helpful/valuable information. Sometimes these students come with a wealth of knowledge and experience.
