Hey Rich,

Keeping them up and keeping them moving is always important. I think it is a good idea especially in math to have them work in groups. Some ofthe students may have easy tips on how they understood a problem that they can share with a student that is struggling.

NIcole,

Great suggestion to utilize groups to encourage involvement from your inattentive students. I also do this and I see that the students actually encourage their peers to be involved. They will not just let them sit there and not participate, especially if they all will be receiving a grade for participation.

Bonnie

Hi Richard,
I encourage my students to participate by giving a 5% participation grade in each course I teach. I have a scale that I use if they are absent or does not participate during a class period.

I have the students participate in class by leaving the chairs and write with each other the math problems on the board. Each one contributes to this and this participation is part of their grade.

Also, I have the students work in groups, and I many times will rotate groups to the front table to work with me individually or as a group.

Hi Nicol,
Studies have proven that group activities are especially benefical to the inattentive student. I love using group activites for various reasons, such as relationship building, shy students become more participative, sometimes students can explain a concept to their peers in an understanding way, etc.
