Unfocused Students

In one of my class the students by the first hour is unfocused. I did reflect on myself and rearrange how I structured the classroom. However, the class still seemed dreamy or distracted. I finally figured out the students where logged onto the computers shopping or playing solitaire. Unfortunately the class is held in a computer lab. Now I insist that everyone log off the computer while class is in session. At present, I see progress in their assignments and eyes on me.

Hi Elise,
It is good not to ban students from the computers during the entire grading period. I feel as you do Elise. Students should be allowed to use the computers during breaks. Whenever you work with the students, they are more likely to be cooperative.

I had a similar problem when I taught a Humanities class in the computer lab. I resolved it fairly well by creating group assignments that had them using the computer for research. That way the group controlled the computer. I also acknowledged each session that the computers were tempting and that they could use the computers for email, shopping etc. during the planned breaks.

Hi Alyce,
It seems as though you have taken care of things. Do not tolerate your students being on the computer playing, shopping, browsing, etc. while you are lecturing. Let the next set of students know on Day 1 what your rule is about this. Make sure to have a rule in place for the next class session.
