Hi Debra,
I agree 100%! At my institution my instructors have a next-class-period turn-around time frame to return graded assignments. Students need to and want to know how they are progressing.

Hi Amanda,
Awesome way to follow up. This practice makes a lot of sense and makes for a better student.

Following up with student assignments is important in that it indicates to students that as instructor you take their work seriously. As a career college instructor it also indicates to students how to work with deadlines in real life work situations. Creating a calendar as part of the syllabus is valuable to both the instructor and the student. It holds both parties accountable for the assignments given. Also, it is important for the instructor to be prompt with returning graded assignments/quizzes to students as part of the follow-up process. It shows the students that the instructor also should have the responsbility to the students to help them see how they are understanding the course.
To make sure I follow up on assignments I have givent to students not only do they have to turn in the homework, but we have a daily quiz on the material from the day before to see how much they remember. Not only is it a good reivew but it gets the students' minds going for the day, instead of lecturing to them while they are still waking up.
It is important to follow up on assignments so that students understand that they are important to their success in class and not just busy work that you do not intend to grade.
First of all it's important that the students know that they will be evaluated on the work done so that they make an effort on doing it right, if we make a habit of not following up on work given they will remember and not even worry about it. I don't belive in "bussy work" that will not be evaluated, our purpose is to instruct not to keep busy.
After following up once, sometime a student has to receive a 0 for a wakeup call.
Hi Kay,
I agree! Every assignment is crucial to the learning growth of students, therefore the assignment should be taken seriously by the instructor to grade it.

Hi Christina,
Every assignment given should be to enhance the learning objective, therefore it is crucial to follow up on every assignment to determine how your students are grasping the information.

It is important to follow up on assignments and readings for several reasons. One, we want students to know that this was not just busy work. By revisiting assignments we can reinterate the importance of the skill or concept. Two, if we do not follow up, it can serve as a type of punishment to the well prepared student and a reward to the student who did not do his/her work. Lastly, the more critical concepts are reviewed, the more apt students are to retain and be able to recall that pertinent information.
It's imporant to follow up assignments with feedback primarily so students feel that the assignment is meaningful--not just fluff or homework. When students see the value in completing assignments, and their relevance to their career goals, they are more likely to turn them in. The feedback then becomes important as a mechanism to let the student know how well they learned the concept, and what to focus on to improve.
