I had never heard the term apple polishing to describe students who are always wanting to make the teacher happy. I found it to be very interesting and funny.

Very deceptive these types of students. For myself such encounters have reveal they can be just as ruthless as they are pleasingly accomodating.
Hidden agendas, to get by on as little if any required effort. Seriously, keeping detail grade records and sharing missing assignments also works. Being aware and Knowing how to manage this type of student is a great leap in professional development, student retention, and classroom management for real....
A kiss up? Students who use this approach are often so adept at it the teacher does not even realize what they are doing--before you know it you have extended deadlines, offered make up quizzes etc! I am particularly susceptible to this type of student so I have to remind myself to be on alert, and when cornered by a student, sometimes it helps me to postpone the discussion for a few minutes--like telling them I have to check something and then I will meet with them, so I can remind myself how to respond.
