Looking beyond the behavior
In the early classes, I think some students are unfocused because they have not fully made the decision to be college students and are grappling with an "imposter mentality." One way as a faculty member I have addressed these emotional and psychological possiblities is through a discussion of the stages of change they are in and what getting their degree means for them and their families.
I am interested in knowing if others have had similar experiences and have suggestions for different responses.
Hi Kristi,
It is great whenever you can tell the students you have walked in their shoes. You can really empathize with the students.

I agree that alot of behaviors stem from fear. Especially in students just starting. I teach an intro class and something I do to attempt to reduce the initial stress is to share my story with them. I had been out of highschool for 10 years before I went back to college. I try to let them know I relate with where they are sitting and showing up that first day is the hardest part.
Hi Susan,
I don't think it is corony at all. Most of our students are easy to lose focus, and they need to be constantly reminded as to why they are in school.

We are developing a "Recipe for My Success" card that each new student will receive soon to attach to their textbook. One side is a statement, photo, etc of their personal motivator ($$, child, travel...) and on the opposite side they will chart week by week duties that will lead them into their next class, ultimately to their graduation. Might sound corny, but we were looking for a tool that keeps their personal "reason why I'm here" consistently in front of them.
Linda,
I total agree with your post. I also think it is important to recognize that the underlying issue in all of these behaviors is fear- even in high performing students. One of the most important things we can contribute to the classroom is an understanding of this issue and creating a positive learning environment. As John Wayne said, "Courage isn't not being afraid, it's saddlin' up anyway" (He also said, "Life is hard, its harder if you're stupid")
Thanks again for your post.
