Fear as a stumbling block
I was little surprised that we focused on the symptoms but didn't address the underlying condition - fear. All of the behaviors involved can be tied back to a basic fear of failure whether it be unpreparedness of even lack of paying attention (apart from legitimate medical issues). Conquer the fear and capture the students imagination and energy. As John Wayne said, "Courage isn't not being afraid, its saddlin' up anyway". Let's make sure that we create positive learning environments and deal with the issue in a straight-forward, understanding basis. This can also work on an individual one-on-one basis even though it takes additional time and effort.
We call it many things...fear, insecurity, shy, boisterous, etc...but they all are basic deterents to the student learning and thus achieving their goals/dreams. Making daily connections takes alot of time and effort, but it is successful with most students. They need regular reassurance that there is a place for them and they will receive the support they need. We use lineup as a basic greeting connection, and you can see alot by just looking into someone's face every day. Then I pick a different student daily to have a deeper/longer conversation with; it lasts a couple minutes usually, but connects.
Hi Denise,
I have a conversation with the students about fear, and if there is a need, I will get other personnel involved.

William and Patricia,
How do you help students that you see are not living up to their full potential due to fear?
Hi William,
I have definitely seen fear as a stumbling block with some students. I have seen students that purposely failed because they are afraid to tackle the real world.
