watching the clock

Alot of students watch the clock, put important/interesting information at the end of class. The students forget about the clock and the last 30 minutes of class fly by.

Hi Sarah,
What did you do with the student that tampered with the clock? I removed the clocks from all classrooms because of the possible distractions.
Patricia

I try to make my class as fun as possible and remind everyone that what they are doing will help them in the future, but I still have many students in my last class that only wanted to the clock to run out so they could go party. Once I even found one tampering with the clock when my back was turned.

Hi Jennifer,
The instructor should make the class so engaging that the students don't want to watch the clock. As instructors, we must bring lots of excitement to the classroom so that time flies. As the old saying goes, "Time flies when you're having fun!"

One of the things I do to prevent the "watching the clock" is encourage group discussion at the end of each class session. This is our time to reflect on the lecture and lessons learned earlier in the day. I also encourage the students to tell me something they liked from that days events as well as something that didn't care for. This keeps them going thru the end of class and also gives me feedback to know that they sre grasping the material presented.

Your ideas are great. Keep up the great work Georgeann

I try to break down the day for the students so they are prepared for what is coming. I will notify them as to what time we will be taking a break. This seems to help them focus.
