Unattentive students

I try to keep my learning material exciting to keep eveyone focused.

Hi Paul,
Variety is a postive factor when teaching. Students can get tired of the same old routine day in and day out. We must be creative with our teaching methods so that we can hold and grab the attention of our students.

I try to break up the lecture with demos to limit the amount of time spent talking and in power point. This helps refocus the students and changes the pace of the class on a regular basis. I also let students know that if they are getting tired to stand up at the back of the room so they don't miss any of the important information we are covering.

I try and instill in my instructors that they use a change of state once in a while. After all anyone will fall asleep after 30 minutes of straight powerpoint with the lights off.

I do the same. Sometimes it is still dificult no matter how enguaging you try to be to keep student from falling assleep. They still need the information that is sometimes a bore to listen to, and nod off anyway. there is always the excuse of work, or some other personal reasons they are dealing with as well. so my last resort is to let them know the importance of the information. this way it hopefully motivates them to at least attemp to engauge themselves in the content of the day.
