enforcing standards

Enforcing standards in the classroom, keeps students all in check. They are on the same starting ground.

This is a big deal around our campus. Administration often times does not support their instructors decesions that are based on school policies. If there is a policy or procedure in place then it must be followed or enforced otherwise is is simply a suggestion. Often times instructors are timid when making decesions, thinking is administration going to make me change it later. Sometimes it feels like the all mighty dollar affects all decesions.

Hi Michael,
Continue to prepare your students for the industry. They will appreciate once they begin their in filed experience as to how well prepared they are.

From time to time I have students that feel the course I am teaching should be set-up differently, and they are being held-back. I usually explain to them that a huge number of students have successfuly completed this course, and that my job is to prepare THEM for the industry, NOT to prepare the INDUSTRY for them. This of course needs to be handled with some finesse, but seems to do the job when delivered properly.

Hi Garrett,
No favortisim! All students must be treated identical. I practice, "What is good for one, is good for all." When you are fair and consistent no one has anything to complain about.

One of the most useful arguments I have for the entire class is "I need to hold everyone to the same standards, i'm not picking on you, if I see someone else doing it they will have the same concequences". Period.

Some students do not like to follow the rules, even though they may become upset, you have to stand your ground, this situation let's them know that you are holding them responsible.

The students also can learn that time is money and everyone needs to be on time and finish projects in a timely manner.

Hi Raquel,
Students really do. Students truly need and want structure. What good are rules, policies, and procedures, if they are not enforced?
Patricia

Students appreciate an instructor that can provide a reasonable amount of structure.
