unfocused students
especially young ones. i usually will pull them aside and have an adult conversation with them alone to find out what the problem is and i just dont let it end there. everyday i ask them how they are doing and if the "problem" is still there. they seem to appreciate that some one cares and that they can come to me if the problem starts again. its amazing how far a little recognition and respect goes they feel they can trust you.
Scott, you are right on track about handling unfocused students. Sometimes students are dealing with problems outside the classroom and need someone to talk to them and ask if everything is ok. A little bit of attention goes a long way with a person who is not getting any attention at all.
You have some student's that is only their becasue of their parent's made them come these are the one's you need to reach out to try to get them involved in the discussion
Hi Scott,
Students like to be paid attention to. Once they know that you care, you see a positive change.

Hi Tim,
Control your students, otherwise they will control the entire class. Come up with a set of rules and enforce them. Once your students realize you are not playing with them, the nonsense will stop.

My big problem is when students get in groups and become involved with cell phones, computers, and talking. They become unfocused. It took pulling them aside and talking to them.telling them that maybe moveing them away from each other will be the next step.
