Normative Vs Instrumental controls

Do we teach them to be leaders or followers?

You can use both normative and instrumental controls to help train both leaders and followers. Teaching new college students that thinking the old way that they did in high school is not acceptable for a college student. You can shame them into a new way of thinking by letting them know that they need to begin thinking critically as well as globally in many of the issues they learn in class. This is a way to allow those who are leaders to understand that in college their leadership is valued and expected.

Can you give more examples on how to implement normative controls?

Is it ... creating an environment where peer pressure promotes cooperation and achievement?

I teach automotive technology. All of our test questions are phrased: Tech A says (x), Tech B says (x), who is correct? In a little play on words, I like to tell the students that "Tech A", who participated and turned in assignments, knows how to fix the car. Tech B texted in class, didn't do the labwork, but passed the test, knows how to pass a class. Who is correct? It doesn't shame them into doing their work, but it helps them see that there's more to it than just an instrumaental grade to be earned.

I dont think I get this. What is an example of a normative control? It doesnt sound to me that shaming a student is a good way of getting them to do something we want. (I know they were talking about employees in the video, but Im not sure I get that either).

Hi Kim,
They are referring to leaders and followers.

Hi Thomas,
You have a full understanding of the video. You have really simplified concepts from the video.

Hello, Kim

The short video discussed how these 2 controls are used to manage people. I asked the question to stimulate a deeper understanding of the use of these controls. To me leaders bend, break, and make rules/controls. Followers follow. Normative controls (Example: shame the person in to doing something) are better but harder to establish. Instrumental (Example: if you do this, you will get that) are easier to set up.
This is my current understanding of the video presented.

I am not as familiar with these terms, can you give more of an explanation about them since in the video nothing was mentioned about leaders and followers.

Hi Thomas,
I feel you are born with these characteristics. The world must have both. Just imagine if you had all of one or the other; the world would be in bad shape. We need some leaders, and we need some followers. I am a leader, but I can follow when there is a need to.
