loud and inattentive students

Believe it or not, I had both at one time in my class. Together they bonded and tried to make it harder not only for me but the other students as well. I did the usual, verbal and written warnings, but that still did not help. After doing some "research" I learned that they had some major issues going on outside of class.I did everything in my power to help and make it clear how much I was not going to tolerate their actions. Needless to say, any interuptions and so forth I did have the support of the school. One did not pass and the other some how made it out. There is only so much you can do for these people but, the biggest support I got was my Supervisors and the school.

In my online classes, it is the jokers that always get me. I can be lecturing and doing my best to help ensure all students are getting the materials, and there is always one student who has to make a joke out of something. I will ask a question and the jokester makes jokes and tries to make light of the whole learning scenario.

The worst one that really made me think about teaching was the student who said he worked in the admissions department for the college I was teaching. He made it a point to tell all the students he would help them get whatever they wanted in their education. This went on for several sessions, until one day (in class) I reminded him of the student code of conduct and told him that as a member of the university he was held to a higher standard, and students would look to him for serious help. He was in college now, and while college should be fun, it should not be a joke. If in fact he felt the need to use my classroom as his personal podium, I would have to talk to both my supervisor and his.

I did contact my supervisor and alert her of my actions so she would not be blindsided should the student complain. He never did and from that point forward, he came to class ready to learn and ready to participate like the rest of the students (I got the feeling my supervisor spoke to his supervisor).

That is a great idea. I will keep that in mind in the event I get one of those type of students.

I had one young lady that I will never forget. She was loud and had poor behavior. I talked to her privately and it helped some but some days I wonder what she consummed before class. She wanted to disrupt class and manage the assignments. She talked 4 others into not doing a writing assignment. When they all 5 got a zero that ended that. I managed to not let her ruin the class and it turned out to quite successful. In all the encounters I managed to remain very cool and not show emotion. I almost turned my books and keys in couple of times that quarter.
Since I had her in class other instructors have just raved about her loud behavior and poor attitude.
